Public Law 117-228, Respect for Marriage Act

Public Law 117-228, the Respect for Marriage Act, took effect on December 13, 2022. It changed 2 parts of the United States Code.

Title 1, Section 7: rewritten. Rewrote section 7 of title 1 to state that an individual is married for Federal law when the marriage is between 2 individuals and valid where entered into, with related definitions and validity rules.

Title 1, Section 7, heading: amended. Replaced the heading in section 7 of title 1 with "Marriage".
